Craving Pizza & Good Veggies in San Miguel? Try Bennu
My favorite pizza is the Margherita with stracciatella. The prosciutto pizza is excellent too, but I am here for their wonderful veggies.
Behind a very unassuming door in San Miguel de Allende is Bennu, a low-key little restaurant built around sourdough, slow-fermented pizza and very good vegetables.

I’m not a big pizza eater. In fact, I rarely go out of my way for pizza. But I do for Bennu.
The restaurant opens into a small, open courtyard, with a beautiful tiled pizza oven tucked in the corner by the kitchen. The design is minimalist and but chic in its own low-key way, which is exactly the kind of casual elegance I love about San Miguel. It feels relaxed, intimate and very easy to settle into.

Bennu was founded by chef Pablo Gil, whose cooking has taken him from Oaxaca to Copenhagen, with much of his early experience at Hartwood in Tulum. His approach to food goes beyond cooking, with a real interest in nutrition, agriculture, sustainability and the relationship between food and the environment. You can feel that sensibility in the menu, particularly in the vegetables.
My favorite pizza is the Margherita with stracciatella. The prosciutto pizza is excellent too.

But honestly, it’s the vegetables that make Bennu particularly good. If you’re bringing a vegetarian, this is an easy choice. The aguachile de jícama is delicious, and many of the vegetable dishes are oven-roasted with a lovely char that brings out so much flavor. The corn and cauliflower are both worth ordering.
